The Convent of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an active nunnery located at the scenic upper end of the town of Kalofer. According to a historical manuscript from 1863, the sanctuary was founded in the 18th century by the Rila monk Dorotei. For three centuries, the convent thrived in beauty and tranquility, developing into a significant hub of spirituality and enlightenment. Following its reconstruction in 1819, a specialized girls' school was opened within its walls, marking one of the earliest educational centers for women in the country. With the valuable assistance of the prominent Revival figure and diplomat Nayden Gerov, nuns from the convent traveled to Russia to collect donations, using these funds in 1862 to build a grander church and residential quarters. However, the path of the convent has been marked by dramatic struggles and destruction, mirroring the turbulent history of Kalofer itself. The complex was completely ruined by Kardzhali raiders twice — in 1799 and 1804 — but the resilient local citizens managed to rebuild it by 1819. The heaviest blow came during the Russo-Turkish Liberation War in 1877, when the retreat of Ottoman troops led to the total plundering and burning of the convent. Once the nation achieved its freedom, the community immediately united to restore the sacred site. In 1880, the renowned master builder Usta Gencho Kanev from Tryavna constructed the present-day church building that stands today. The interior of the church features an exquisitely crafted iconostasis and a beautifully styled altar space. A centerpiece of the temple is the captivating icon titled "Christ Blessing," painted by an unknown master artist whose identity remains a historical mystery. Located close to the main church building is the famous holy spring (ayazmo) and its small Chapel of Saint Panteleimon, built in 1825. Local lore tells a story of the miraculous healing powers of the spring, whose waters are said to have restored the sight of a high-ranking Ottoman official's daughter. Today, the peaceful convent welcomes pilgrims and travelers seeking spiritual serenity and a connection to centuries of Bulgarian Orthodox heritage.
