Sreden Kupen Peak (2724 m) is one of the most imposing summits in Northwestern Rila. Located in the alpine heart of the mountain, it offers unique panoramas of Lovnitsa, Zliya Zab, Orlovets, and Malyovitsa peaks. The ascent is a classic high-altitude route that combines technical sections with breathtaking views of the legendary Strashnoto Ezero (The Scary Lake). Route and Logistics The trek is of moderate difficulty and requires good physical fitness and proper mountain gear. - Starting Point: CPS Malyovitsa (25 km from Samokov). Accessible via a paved road with a paid parking lot on-site. - First Stage: From CPS to Malyovitsa Hut (approx. 1 hour). The trail is easy, following the blue markings along the Malyovitsa River. - Second Stage: From the hut, head south along the main red-marked trail toward Malyovitsa Peak. After 30 minutes, veer left following the blue markings toward the Orlovets shelter. - Final Ascent: From the Orlovets shelter, continue northeast toward Lovnitsa Peak. The trail then traverses Golyam Kupen Peak to reach the final goal – Sreden Kupen. Nature and Panoramas The area is part of the Rila National Park. The route crosses belts of coniferous forests (spruce, fir, pine), transitioning into vast dwarf pine fields and alpine meadows. Golden eagles, falcons, and Balkan chamois are often spotted here. The summit offers one of the best perspectives of Strashnoto Ezero, nestled at the northern foot of the Kupeni peaks.
