The Dragonfly Reserve is a small conservation site south of Burgas, near the village of Debelt, in the Arpa Dere area. It covers about 2 ha. It is not a legally protected area but a site created by the Burgas-based NGO Green Bulgaria, which bought the land and used donations to build the rest area and information boards.
At its centre is an artificial pond with habitats designed for dragonflies, and white and yellow water lilies. More than 20 dragonfly species breed here. It is described as the only specialised dragonfly reserve in Bulgaria.
The site is small: a wetland and a shelter, with no benches. Do not expect marked trails or observation towers. Entry is free and open. Dragonflies are most numerous in spring and summer, in the warm, sunny hours.
Protect the plants by the water and do not disturb the wildlife. Bring water and a hat, as there is no shade around.
