Yulen Reserve

The strict scientific reserve of Yulen is located in the very heart of the Pirin National Park, spanning an impressive territory of 3,156.2 hectares. Established in 1994, its core mission is the total insulation of high-mountain ecosystems from any human interference. Rising between 1,600 and 2,850 meters above sea level on a rugged granite foundation, Yulen is a living laboratory of wilderness where the processes of evolution and climatic shifts unfold in their perfect, natural rhythm.

Natural Wonders and Glacial Lakes

• The Blue Heart of Pirin: Yulen stands out with its extraordinary wealth of water bodies. Nested within its boundaries are some of the most stunning and pristine glacial lake groups in the Pirin Mountains: the Vasilashki, Tipitski, Strazhishki, Polezhanski, and Disilishki lakes.
• The River Sources: These high-altitude lakes feed several crisp mountain streams and rivers that shape the landscape of the park.
• Terrain: Shaped by ancient glaciations and erosion, the reserve features majestic rock formations, cirques, and moraines resting upon dark-brown forest and mountain-meadow soils.

Glacial Relics and Old-Growth Forests

• Forest Veterans: One of Yulen’s greatest treasures is its pristine, old-growth forests of Macedonian pine (byala mura), Scots pine, Norway spruce, and silver fir, interspersed with rare individual specimens of Bosnian pine (cherna mura).
• The Bulgarian Red Data Book: The reserve protects over 700 species of vascular plants, 44 of which are endangered. Here, visitors can find the exquisite globe-flower, narcissus-flowered anemone, and golden columbine.
• Ice Age Survivors: A true highlight for botanists is the presence of glacial relics that survived the last Ice Age—crowberry (Empetrum nigrum) and procumbent sibbaldia, alongside quillwort and elephant’s head.
• Fauna: The Realm of Birds and Large Predators
• Large Mammals: Because human access is strictly regulated, the reserve provides a safe sanctuary for the brown bear and the wolf.
• A Bird Sanctuary: Birds are the most abundant representatives of fauna in Yulen. The deep forests and craggy heights shelter typical alpine species like the spotted nutcracker, woodpecker, mountain tit, rock partridge, and the elusive western capercaillie.

The Ancient Fortress Near Bansko

• Pre-Roman Stronghold: Within the reserve boundaries, about 12 km from the mountain town of Bansko, lies a mysterious ancient fortress built long before the Roman Empire conquered these territories.
• Scale and Archaeology: The fortification stretches nearly 100 meters in length and between 25 and 40 meters in width. Today, a low stone wall from its northern rampart remains visible, and archaeological digs here have unearthed fascinating fragments of ancient, hand-made pottery.
