Arkutino is a beach between Sozopol and Primorsko, in Primorsko municipality, about 2.5 km north-west of the mouth of the Ropotamo. How to get there, where to park and what the beach itself offers are covered in our guides below. This page is about what lies behind the beach.

The marsh

The name comes from the lagoon behind the dunes: Arkutino, also called the Bear Marsh. It is part of the Ropotamo reserve and is cut off from the sea by sand dunes where sea daffodils grow. The lagoon covers 62.2 ha but is only about half a metre deep and almost fresh.

Only part of the water is open. The rest is covered with duckweed, bur-reed and other marsh plants, and the banks with reeds. Arkutino is one of the richest sites in Bulgaria for white and yellow water lilies. The lagoon is an important stop for birds on the Via Pontica migration route, and rare species nest here.

Good to know

  • The dunes and the marsh are protected: stay on the boardwalks and do not pick the lilies.
  • From the beach you can see St Thomas island, one of the few places in Bulgaria with wild cacti (Opuntia).
  • A holiday village is being built in the northern part of the area.

Nearby

1.8 km to the south are the remains of the Ranuli fortress (Valchanovo Kale), and 2.9 km to the south-east is the Zmeyova Kashta dolmen. The Dyuni resort is 5 km to the north-west.
