Koznitsa - Vezhen peak

The trek from Koznitsa saddle to Vezhen peak (2198 meters) stands as one of the most picturesque and panoramic hiking routes in the Central Balkan Mountains. Vezhen peak rises as the highest summit of the Zlatitsa-Teteven mountain section, attracting hikers with its vast grassy ridges, steep northern valleys, and close proximity to the rocky alpine ridge known among tourists as the Staroplaninsko Konче (Balkan Horse). The route offers a classic Balkan mountain ascent with sweeping views toward the Rose Valley to the south and the Teteven Balkan to the north.

Route Parameters and Logistics

• Starting Point: Koznitsa saddle, located on the main Sub-Balkan road between the towns of Klisura and Koprivshtitsa.
• Ending Point: Vezhen peak – 2198 meters above sea level.
• Total Elevation Gain: Approximately 1100 meters of positive elevation gain during the ascent.
• Distance and Time: The trail distance is about 6.8 kilometers one way, and the pure hiking time varies between 2 hours 30 minutes and 3 hours 30 minutes depending on fitness and weather conditions.

Trail and Route Description

• Initial Stage and Govedarnika: The trail begins on the southern slopes of the main ridge, where a mountain tourist shelter or tourist dormitory is built to accommodate hikers. From this point, the path climbs up and crosses the characteristic meadow area named Govedarnika.
• Terrain and Navigation: After the initial climb, the terrain becomes mostly open and alpine, offering endless horizons but requiring extra caution during foggy conditions. In several ridge sections, the summer trail is not strictly marked, making it highly recommended to follow the natural terrain contours or the winter steel stake markings.
• The Summit and Staroplaninsko Konche: The climb culminates on the wide plateau of Vezhen peak. Right in the vicinity of the summit lies the famous and highly attractive narrow rocky ridge, which due to its exposed cliffs and technical nature is famously named the Staroplaninsko Konche.
