The Koprivshtitsa Museum of Education is the permanent exhibition "Koprivshtitsa – a Centre of Learning in the National Revival". It opened on 1 November 2012 in the Dorosiev House, birthplace of the teacher and politician Yako Dorosiev, built in 1840. It is run by the Koprivshtitsa Museum Directorate.
The exhibition tells the story of the town’s school through its three main stages — cell school, mutual school and class school. A cell-school classroom and a mutual-school classroom using the Bell–Lancaster method, where one teacher taught many children with the help of older pupils, are recreated in detail, so the shift from old to modern schooling is easy to see.
The educators shown include Hadzhi Gero Mushek, Neofit Rilski, Hristo Pulekov, Yoakim Gruev, Nayden Popstoyanov and Petar Zhilkov, and one room is devoted to Nayden Gerov. A prized exhibit is the school icon of Sts Cyril and Methodius by Stanislav Dospevski, commissioned by Gerov. Original textbooks and teaching aids of the period are on show too.
A cell school opened in Hadzhi Gero Mushek’s home in 1810, a public school in 1822, Bulgaria’s second mutual school (founded by Neofit Rilski) in 1837, and the first class school (founded by Nayden Gerov) in 1846. From 1958 to 1989 the house held a museum named after Yako Dorosiev (1890–1925).
Check opening times on the Museum Directorate’s website.
With children: the recreated classrooms show clearly how children were taught almost two centuries ago.
Combine with: the Directorate sells a combined ticket for six of its museums. The Georgi Benkovski House Museum is next door, and steps lead up to the memorial to "the man who gave the fatal signal".
