The Haskovo Regional History Museum stands at 19 Svoboda Square in the town centre. Its collections hold more than 120,000 objects on the history and culture of the region.
The exhibitions are "Archaeology", "Bulgarian History from the 15th to the 19th Century", "Haskovo’s Awakeners", "Thracian Art in the Eastern Rhodopes", "Town Life after the Liberation" and "Ethnography".
The renewed archaeology exhibition opened in 2016 in a modern two-storey hall and follows the region from the Neolithic (7th–5th millennium BC) to the late Middle Ages. The museum’s emblem is one of two rare "Trojan-type" cups from the 1st century BC. The museum also has a collection of more than 22,000 ancient and medieval coins.
Museum work in Haskovo began in 1927 with the founding of an Archaeological Committee; the first curators were the teacher Ivan Karagyaurov and the artist Dimitar Ivanov – Litso. From 1935 it was called the Haskovo Archaeological Museum. It was housed in the Kirkovo School until 1975, when the present building opened.
Check the opening hours on the museum’s website before you go.
Combine with: the museum’s house museums — the Paskaleva House, showing the life of wealthy Haskovo families, and the Kirkovo School with the "Haskovo’s Awakeners" exhibition.
