Golyam Persenk Peak (2,095 m) is the seventh-highest summit in the Rhodope Mountains and the proud crown of the Chernatitsa Ridge. Rising northwest of the scenic village of Zabardo, this imposing massif features three distinct peaks, with the southern one being the highest point. The mountain is almost entirely blanketed by dense coniferous forests, with only a few small meadows clearing up around the summit. Due to the lack of official trails or markings to the very top, Golyam Persenk remains off the beaten path, offering an ideal escape for adventurers seeking pure wilderness and mountain solitude. Natural Features, Terrain, and History - Contrasting Slopes: While the eastern slopes drop steeply into the valley, they hide an exceptional piece of historical heritage at their base—a well-preserved, centuries-old ancient Roman road. - Archaeological Traces: The highest point sits on a small clearing marked by a stone pyramid. Here, clear remnants of historical excavations can be seen, proving that the massif held significant strategic or ritual importance in antiquity. - Mezar Gidik Saddle: A vital mountain junction at the foot of the peak. From this crossroad, trails branch off to the neighboring Persenk Peak (a 40-minute hike) and to Persenk Hut to the north. Route Logistics (Starting from Skalni Mostove Hut) - Stage 1 (To Mezar Gidik): Start from the large parking area in front of Skalni Mostove Hut, heading southwest along a dirt road. Follow a small stream uphill through the forest (look for sparse trail markings). After 30 minutes, join a wider road coming from Kabata Hut and follow it for another 40 minutes until you reach the Mezar Gidik saddle. - Stage 2 (The Off-Trail Climb): From the saddle, turn left onto the ancient Roman road heading southeast. After about 500 meters, look for a small, unmarked path branching off to the right near a flat section in the woods. This path skirts the northern side of the massif before fading away completely. - Navigating to the Top: The final push relies strictly on natural terrain navigation. Climb steeply south through thick forest, cross a shallow saddle to reach the second sub-peak (marked by a large stone pile), descend briefly, and make the final short trek up to the main summit. Useful Information for Hikers - Trail Specifications: The one-way distance is 4.4 km with a total elevation gain of 515 meters. The ascent takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. - Winter Hiking Tips: The peak can be climbed in winter, but it requires an early start due to short daylight hours and caution regarding slippery, steep slopes. Before heading out, it is essential to check if the asphalt road to Skalni Mostove Hut is clear of snow and open to vehicles.
