Milevi Skali Peak (1593 m) is one of the most spectacular panoramic spots in the Western Rhodopes. Starting from Dolene Station, this route offers a unique blend of the nostalgic Septevri-Dobrinishte narrow-gauge railway and a rewarding mountain hike with a vertical gain of nearly 1,000 meters. The summit provides vast views over the Chepinska River valley, Rila, and the alpine peaks of Northern Pirin. Logistics and Starting Point - By Train: The most scenic option. The ride from Septemvri to Dolene takes about 45 minutes. We recommend taking the early morning train (around 08:55 AM) to ensure enough time for the climb and the return journey. - By Car: A dirt road leads to the station, branching off the Septemvri-Velingrad highway (14 km from Varvara village). It is best to park at the beginning of the dirt track and walk for about 30-40 minutes to the station unless you have a high-clearance 4x4. Route Details The hike starts from Dolene Station and follows the green markings. - Duration: Approximately 3.5 hours one way. - Difficulty: Challenging due to the elevation gain, but technically manageable for hikers in good physical condition. - Terrain: The trail passes through sparse oak forests and beautiful meadows, reaching ancient beech forests near the top. The green markings are well-maintained and easy to follow. - Water: Fresh water is available at the station and at a fountain about 15 minutes up the trail. Carry extra water, as the south-facing slope can get very hot on sunny days. Practical Tips - Alternative Descent: You can take the yellow-marked trail descending toward the Septemvri-Velingrad road, but be aware that it passes by a sheepfold with large livestock guardian dogs near the end. - Navigation: Always check the latest train schedules on the BDZ website and use offline or online maps (like kade.si) to verify your location during the trek.
