This mountain route connects one of Bulgaria’s most famous geological wonders—the "Wonderful Bridges" rock arches—with the serene high-mountain meadows of the Kabata area. This hike is relatively easy, making it an ideal weekend getaway that combines pristine nature, cultural heritage, and panoramic viewpoints.

The Starting Point: Wonderful Bridges Hut (1,430 m)

Situated just steps away from the massive natural marble bridges, this hut is a primary base for hikers exploring the Central Rhodope Mountains.

  • Amenities: The complex includes a main solid-rock building and several wooden bungalows, with a total capacity of 34 beds. The main building offers 12 beds, indoor bathrooms, and central heating. A traditional restaurant and a small snack shop are available on-site.
  • Access: Accessible via a 17 km paved road branching off the main Asenovgrad – Smolyan highway (the turnoff is shortly after the village of Hvoyna).

Trail Overview to Kabata Hut

  • Duration: Approximately 2 hours at a regular pace.
  • The Hike: The trail begins at the Wonderful Bridges, passes by the neighboring Skalni Mostove Hut (15 minutes away), and leads through ancient spruce forests and sunny alpine meadows. The incline is gradual and suitable for casual hikers.
  • The Destination: Kabata Hut (1,654 m)

Kabata Hut is located in a beautiful mountain saddle bordered by Gurgutevitsa Peak and Tsirikova Tsarkva Peak. The area formerly hosted the large "Slanchevi Polyani" (Sunny Meadows) youth camp. Today, while many surrounding camp structures stand abandoned, the main hut remains operational for travelers. Key eco-trails connect Kabata to the traditional villages of Malevo, Hvoyna, and Orehovo (a 4.5-hour trek from the Wonderful Bridges via Kabata).

Must-See Nearby:

  • Tsirikova Tsarkva Peak (The Crying Church): Located just a 15-minute walk from Kabata Hut. A memorial chapel stands at the top, built to honor the 17th-century local Bulgarians who chose to sacrifice their lives rather than renounce their Christian faith. The peak offers breathtaking cliffside views of the surrounding valleys.
