The Chetirtska Cave, also registered under the name "Uske," is a small yet intriguing geological site located in Southwestern Bulgaria. Situated at the confluence where the Eleshnitsa River flows into the Struma River, this cave is an excellent spot for a quick, effortless detour for travelers exploring the Kyustendil and Nevestino regions. Location and Directions - Location: Village of Chetirtsi, Nevestino Municipality, Kyustendil District (Uske locality). - How to get there: Driving from the neighboring village of Nevestino, look for a dirt road branching off to the left right next to the very first houses of Chetirtsi. Follow this track as it passes by local meadows and orchards. The road soon narrows into a footpath. After a brief 10 to 15-minute walk, you will reach the cave's entrance gaping open on the left bank of the Eleshnitsa River. Cave Features and Technical Specifications The cave is completely horizontal and perfectly safe for casual exploration without professional guidance. - Structure: It is a single-level, humid, branched, and diaclastic cave (formed along bedrock fractures). - Interior: Inside, you will find two small chambers. The main chamber spans about 12 square meters, leading into a second, smaller cavity. Standard cave formations (speleothems) can be observed inside. - Gear Requirements: There are NO vertical drops or siphons inside. Ropes, ladders, or climbing equipment are not required. A standard flashlight or headlamp is the only essential item. - Note: Visitors might notice several dug-out sections inside the chambers, left behind by destructive treasure-hunting activities in the past. History of Exploration The cave was first surveyed and mapped in 1967 during a National Speleological Expedition by R. Radushev and L. Popov from the Sofia-based caving clubs "Edelweiss" and "Aleko." The cave was officially re-mapped on May 23, 1983, by L. Popov, V. Vasilev, and P. Chichkan.
