Ancient Serdika

The "Ancient Serdica" Archaeological Exhibition is one of the most compelling open-air museum spaces in Bulgaria, functioning as the core of the larger Ancient Serdica Complex. Located entirely underground at 2 Knyaginya Maria Luiza Boulevard, the site officially opened on September 17, 2019, celebrating Sofia City Day. The museum transports visitors back to Late Antiquity and the Early Byzantine era, showcasing the luxurious lifestyle of Serdica’s urban elite during the city’s golden age (4th–6th centuries AD). Discovery and Excavation These remarkable archaeological treasures were uncovered between 2010 and 2012. Their discovery was a direct consequence of the massive urban infrastructure renovation in downtown Sofia and the construction of the "Serdica II" metro station for the capital's second subway line. Urban Layout and Elite Architecture Spanning an impressive 6,000 square meters, the complex displays several ancient neighborhoods (insulae) organized along the main grid streets of the Roman city: - Infrastructure: The site features sections of six authentic Roman streets, public thermae (baths), and five large buildings that served both residential and commercial-industrial purposes. - The Mansions: The residences boast vast dimensions, equipped with private bath sections and advanced hypocaust (underfloor) heating systems. Their lavish interior decorations highlight the wealth and social status of Serdica's ruling class. - The Felix Mosaic: A crowning artistic highlight of the complex is the Felix mosaic, beautifully and completely preserved on the floor of one of the aristocratic homes. - Layers of History: Visitors can also view structural fragments of even older public and private buildings dating back to the 2nd–3rd centuries AD. Global Historical and Spiritual Importance The exhibition holds the ruins of two religious complexes of paramount importance for early European Christianity: - The Episcopal Basilica of Protogenes: One of the earliest Christian temples established in the region. Historical evidence suggests this very church hosted the famous Council of Serdica in 343 AD, an ecumenical gathering of bishops from across the Roman world. - The Residence of Archbishop Leontius: A grand administrative and spiritual palace from the late 6th century, illustrating Serdica’s status as a leading archbishopric seat. The exhibits are enhanced by displays of fine artifacts discovered during the digs—including pottery, coins, and everyday tools—giving a rare glimpse into the daily life of ancient Serdica.
