North-Central Bulgaria
North-Central Bulgaria is the country's cultural heartland, stretching from the Danube in the north to the main ridge of Stara Planina in the south and covering the oblasts of Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Ruse, Razgrad, and Silistra. It is a region of revival-era architecture, medieval capitals, and the traditions that shaped modern Bulgaria.
Veliko Tarnovo — the medieval capital with its Tsarevets fortress — anchors the region. Nearby, Tryavna and the Etar open-air museum preserve craft traditions and 19th-century wooden architecture. Ruse, Bulgaria's Danube port, has Belle Époque boulevards and opera, while the central Balkan offers some of the country's finest long-distance hiking.
