Nestled in the rugged heart of the Troyan Balkan, Steneto is one of the largest and most dramatic nature reserves within Central Balkan National Park. Encompassing the breathtaking upper drainage basin of the Cherni Osam River over an area of more than 3,500 hectares, Steneto stands as a monument to untouched wilderness where nature reigns absolute. History & UNESCO World Recognition First protected as a national park in 1963 and reclassified as a strict nature reserve in 1979, Steneto guards primeval ecosystems of global significance. Recognizing its irreplaceable primary forests and unique karst landscapes, UNESCO officially inscribed Steneto into the global network of Biosphere Reserves under the "Man and the Biosphere" program. Spectacular Karst Landscape, Gorges & Caves The terrain of Steneto is extraordinarily wild, heavily fragmented, and precipitous. At the "Haidushko Igralo" and "Bivola" sites, sheer vertical cliffs tower over 150 meters high, forming the dramatic Steneto Gorge along the riverbed. This rich limestone landscape has fostered the creation of remarkable underground geological wonders: - Raychova Dupka: The second-deepest abyss cave in Bulgaria, plunging to a dizzying depth of 377 meters. - Kumanitsa Cave: One of Bulgaria's longest subterranean river caves, stretching nearly 2,000 meters in length. Ancient Beech Forests & Botanical Diversity The reserve's varied elevations host over 1,000 plant species. Over 79% of its forested area consists of pure, virgin European beech stands with an average age exceeding 200 years, alongside ancient specimen trees reaching over 320 years of age. - Forest Composition: Alongside beech, the canopy features hornbeam, sycamore maple, oak, and small pockets of silver fir and Norway spruce. - Botanical Jewels: Steneto harbors one of Bulgaria's largest native habitats of cherry laurel, as well as rare populations of European yew, Savin juniper, and Haberlea (Haberlea rhodopensis). Avian Sanctuary & Bear Refuge Steneto holds the record for the highest avian diversity among all nature reserves in the Balkan Mountain Range: - Raptor Haven: The soaring cliffs and old-growth trees provide nesting sites for rare birds of prey, including Imperial Eagles, Booted Eagles, Egyptian Vultures, Griffon Vultures, Short-toed Snake Eagles, and Ural Owls. - Mammals: The secluded gorge offers a safe sanctuary for the brown bear, while the crystal-clear waters of the Cherni Osam River support healthy populations of the European otter.
