Sevlievo is a town in Gabrovo province, in the Sevlievo field of the central Fore-Balkan. The Rositsa river runs along its eastern and northern edge. About 16,900 people live there. It lies 23 km north-west of Gabrovo, 42 km west of Veliko Tarnovo and 34 km from Lovech.
4 km north-west of town, above the Rositsa gorge, is the medieval fortress town of Hotalich. It began as a military stronghold in the 5th–6th century and was rebuilt by the Bulgarian state in the 10th century. It was lived in until the end of the 17th century. Excavations show that it is the largest medieval town in Bulgaria by area outside the capitals of Pliska, Preslav and Tarnovo.
Today Sevlievo is an industrial town, home to the Ideal Standard–Vidima bathroom ceramics and fittings plants and other factories.
