The route leads from the village of Orehovo in the Western Rhodopes, Chepelare municipality, to Persenk hut below the Persenk ridge. The path is about 11 km. On foot the climb takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, mostly on a forest road through conifer woods.
About 12 km of forest road also runs from Orehovo to the hut. Its condition varies from year to year, so ask at the hut or in the village before driving up in a low car.
Persenk hut stands at about 1,700–1,750 m (sources differ). It is large, with about 119 beds, and has a ski run next to it. Just below the hut is the chapel of St Prophet Elijah. Around Orehovo there are many more chapels, kept up by the villagers themselves.
The name is of Turkish-Persian origin and means "barrier, obstacle". The ridge is defined by the peaks of Golyam Persenk (2,091 m) and Malak Persenk. Golyam Persenk is about 2 hours from the hut.
The climb is steady but on a wide track with no technical sections. It suits children used to longer walks. Above the hut, towards Golyam Persenk, the paths are more exposed and the weather changes quickly.
