Museum of Romanian Prince Carol I

The "His Royal Majesty Carol I" House Museum in the town of Pordim (Pleven region) is a unique historical monument that preserves the memory of Romania's crucial contribution to the Liberation War. Established in 1907 by the "Tsar Liberator Alexander II" Committee, the museum transports visitors back to the epic months of 1877. During the bloody and decisive Siege of Pleven, the small settlement of Pordim became a strategic command hub and the Headquarters of the Romanian Army, led personally by Prince Carol I.

Exhibitions and Unique Military Collections

• The Authentic Varban Iliev House: The exhibition is set up inside the wonderfully preserved National Revival house that served as a military base. It sits right next to the historic Headquarters of the Romanian forces.
• The King's Personal Belongings: Visitors can immerse themselves in the authentic wartime environment of the Romanian ruler. On display are his original canvas camp bed, field table, folding stools, and his personal washbasin used during the campaign.
• Archival Evidence: The collection protects rare original photographs capturing authentic moments of Prince Carol I’s stay in Pordim throughout 1877.
• A Rich Uniform Collection: Thanks to historic donations from the Romanian Ministry of War (in 1904, 1954, and 1967), the museum houses an impressive array of genuine military uniforms representing various branches of the Romanian army.

The Artillery Hall and Open-Air Park

• The Artillery Hall: The indoor weapons exhibition showcases the heavy gear of the allied forces. Highlights include cavalry pikes, Romanian pioneering (engineering) equipment, grenades, and powerful Krupp cannons (1868 model), complete with their original limbers and full battlefield gear.
• Open-Air Exhibition: Spread across the museum’s green yard is an outdoor artillery display. It showcases heavy 9- and 24-pounder cannons used by the Romanian military park, dated 1867, 1876, and 1877.
