The trek from Perelik Hut to Lednitsata Hut is one of the most panoramic and rewarding high-mountain sections in the Rhodope Mountains. The route follows the main mountain ridge and forms a key part of the prestigious E-8 European Long Distance Trail (the Rila–Rhodope section in Bulgaria). The hike features gentle rolling terrain, sprawling alpine meadows, and endless horizons unique to the Rhodopes. A major highlight of this path is that with minor detours, you can stand atop the two highest peaks in the entire mountain range: Golyam Perelik (2,191 m) and Orpheus Peak (2,188 m). Route Essentials: - Terrain Type: Mostly soft dirt tracks and single-tracks, clear and excellently blazed. No technically difficult or dangerous sections. - Difficulty: Easy to moderate in this direction (predominantly downhill with only two brief ascents). - Note: During the summer months, the trail is highly exposed to the sun, so sun protection is a must. Fresh water springs/fountains are available at several spots along the way. Logistics and Starting Point Perelik Hut can be easily reached with any type of vehicle. The turnoff is clearly signposted on the mountain road connecting Smolyan and the village of Stoykite (strategically nestled between Pamporovo Ski Resort and Shiroka Laka village). The asphalt road is narrow but in perfect condition. Shortly before reaching the hut, the asphalt changes into a well-maintained dirt road. Trail Breakdown: 1. Perelik Hut – The Mugla Junction (Crucial Navigation Point in Fog) Starting from Perelik Hut, the red markers guide you across an open meadow, occasionally intersecting the main dirt road heading toward Golyam Perelik Peak (the true summit is occupied by a military base but is easily skirted around). Soon, you will reach a small forest chapel equipped with a gazebo and a water fountain (note that the spring may dry up during peak summer months). From the chapel, the winter marker stakes point straight across a vast meadow, leaving the main road and the famous "Bear House" (Kashtata na mechkite) on your left. The path drops slightly into a small stream, crosses it, and immediately enters the first short, comfortable uphill section. Crucial Alert for Navigating in Fog (Junction 2): Once on the ridge, the trail is easy to follow, but you will hit a tricky intersection. Someone has laid out a stone arrow on the ground pointing left, while the official signpost on the iron stake indicates slightly to the right. Follow the right-hand signpost! The misleading stone arrow on the ground branches off via blue markers to the Muglenska River valley toward Mugla village, which will take you far off course from Lednitsata Hut. 2. Ascending Under Orpheus Peak (~2,188 m) The trail continues along the main ridge line until it reaches the second and final proper ascent of the trek—leading under the slopes of Orpheus Peak (also known historically as Karlaka, Shirokolashki Snegarnik, or Shilestata Chuka). Water Source: Just before reaching the peak area, a sign points to a freshwater spring located about 100 meters down a side path to the left. The Summit detour: The official E-8 trail bypasses the summit block. However, since the true peak is just a few hundred meters away across smooth, grassy terrain, it is highly recommended to take a quick detour to the top. On a clear day, the 360-degree views from here are legendary. 3. Forest Sections and the St. Peter and Paul Chapel Leaving Orpheus Peak behind, the trail enters a deep, cool coniferous forest and begins a steady, continuous descent that gradually grows steeper. The path moves between shaded forest segments and rounded meadows. At the second major clearing, you will spot the St. Peter and Paul Chapel (a reliable freshwater fountain sits 100 meters to the right of the chapel). Note: The chapel is a major trail junction. Dropping down to the right takes you directly to Gela village, while the blue path to the left heads down to Mugla village. 4. Final Descent to Lednitsata Hut Stay on the main red-blazed trail, which increases its downhill grade and plunges deep back into the thick forest. If it has been raining, the soil here turns muddy and slippery, so watch your footing. The trail will cross a wide logging road—do not turn onto it (right goes to Gela, left to Mugla). Cross it perpendicularly and keep tracking the red blazes through the woods. Near the very end, the path briefly overlaps with a shallow stream bed before Lednitsata Hut finally appears through the trees.
