Golitsa Peak (1921 m) is arguably one of the most scenic summits in the Rhodope Mountains. Although it is not the highest in the Chernatitsa ridge, its distinctive silhouette and bare, grassy top make it a standout destination. Located on the Modar range, the peak offers stunning 360-degree vistas of the endless Rhodope ridges and the emerald waters of the Vacha Reservoir. Routes and Starting Points Several trails lead to the summit: - From Osikovo Village (Main Route): The trek begins at the village center (1200 m altitude). A dirt road heads north, eventually transitioning into a forest trail with frequent yellow markings. The hike from Osikovo to the foot of the peak takes about 2 hours, followed by a steep 1-hour final ascent to the summit. - From Lilkovo Village: Often combined with a hike to Modar Peak for a full-day mountain adventure. - From Chilingira Complex: A longer and more demanding route starting from the Vacha Reservoir area. Hidden Gems Along the Way The area near Osikovo is home to mysterious rock formations and ancient sites: - Pobit Kamak & The Stone Boat: Hidden forest treasures featuring a well-maintained rest area with hammocks and benches. The "Stone Boat" is marked by ancient ritual niches, while "Pobit Kamak" (The Hammered Stone) can be climbed via a wooden ladder. - The Panoramic Bench: Located just before entering Osikovo, this iconic spot offers an unparalleled bird's-eye view of the Vacha Reservoir. Practical Information - Elevation Gain: Approximately 720 meters (from Osikovo). - Duration: 6–7 hours total (round trip). - Difficulty: Moderate to High (due to the steep final climb and slippery rock runs). - Travel Tip: The road to Osikovo is narrow and winding – drive carefully. The summit is exposed and can be very windy; during rain, the rocky screes at the base become extremely slippery and dangerous.
