Located in the town of Batak, the historic Church of Saint Nedelya stands as one of the most poignant and sacred symbols of the Bulgarian struggle for freedom. Built in 1813, today it is a National Historical Monument and a solemn ossuary preserving the memory of the martyrs of the 1876 April Uprising.

Construction and Architecture

The church was built in an extraordinary timeframe of just 75 days, constructed through the relentless community labor of the people of Batak. The land was personally donated by the town's mayor at the time, Todor Balinov.

Designed by the renowned master builders Marko Ziso and Petar Chompala, the church is a solid stone-built cross-domed structure. Surrounded by high stone walls and fitted with heavy oak doors, its fortress-like construction later played a decisive role in its fate.

A Citadel of Bulgarian Culture and Faith

Throughout the 19th century, the church remained a bastion of national identity. Among the notable clergymen who served here were Dimitar Paunov, Iliya Yankov, Neycho Paunov, Petar Popiliev, Hieromonk Nikifor, and Hieromonk Kiril—the spiritual advisor of Bulgaria’s national hero, Vasil Levski. Greek was never used in the liturgy; services were held exclusively in Church Slavonic, with sermons delivered in Bulgarian.

The Heroic and Tragic Legacy of the April Uprising

In the spring of 1876, during the April Uprising against Ottoman rule, Saint Nedelya Church became the final stronghold for the defenders of Batak. For days, its stone walls sheltered around 2,000 villagers—mostly women, children, and the elderly. Following a fierce resistance, the sanctuary became the site of the tragic Batak Massacre, where those inside met a tragic martyrdom.

From Sacred Place to Historic Museum

After Bulgaria’s liberation in 1878, the church ceased regular religious services and was preserved as a memorial shrine holding the remains of the fallen heroes.

  • 1955: Declared a State Museum.
  • 1977: Designated a National Historical Monument of Culture.
