The Dimitrovgrad – Dragoman route is a stage of the Sultans Trail, an international long-distance hiking route from Vienna to Istanbul. It starts in Dimitrovgrad (Tsaribrod in Bulgarian) in Serbia, crosses the border at Kalotina and ends in Dragoman. It is about 25 km long.

The route

From Dimitrovgrad the route runs about 8 km to the Gradina – Kalotina border crossing, which you cross on foot. In Bulgaria it continues through the villages of Kalotina, Novo Bardo and Dragoil to Dragoman. There is little height gain.

What you will see

Dimitrovgrad is a town in the Western Outlands — lands with a Bulgarian population that remained in Serbia after the First World War. Kalotina lies in a basin ringed by the peaks of Gabor, Goli Vrah, Ravnishte and Gradishte, by the Nishava and Ezhovitsa rivers. Dragoman is a small town at the foot of the karst Chepan mountain; the Dragoman marsh lies 1.5 km east of it.

Difficulty and preparation

An easy but long stage, mostly on roads and village streets. Carry a passport or ID card — there are checks at the border.

Getting there

Dimitrovgrad is on the Serbian side of the Kalotina border crossing, on the Sofia – Niš road. Dragoman is 36 km north-west of Sofia and has a railway station.
