The Museum of Christian Art is in the crypt of the Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral in Sofia. Founded in 1965 as a branch of the National Gallery, it holds one of the richest icon collections in the world. The cathedral has its own page; this one is about the museum beneath it.

What to see

The display covers Christian art in the Bulgarian lands from the official Christianisation of the Roman Empire in the 4th century to the Bulgarian National Revival of the 18th–19th centuries: icons, fresco fragments, prints, manuscripts and church plate. The pieces come from the National Gallery, the National Archaeological Institute, the National History Museum, the National Church Museum, the museums of Shumen, Veliko Tarnovo, Nessebar, Ruse and Plovdiv, and the Rila, Bachkovo, Preobrazhenski, Etropole and other monasteries.

History

The cathedral was built between 1904 and 1912 to designs by the Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev, on the highest point of Sofia at 552 m, and consecrated on 24 August 1924. Its basement was meant as a burial vault, but no burials ever took place. It now houses the museum.

Visiting

The entrance is separate from the cathedral’s. The museum is closed on Mondays and public holidays; check the National Gallery website for times.

Combine with: combined tickets are sold with the Palace (National Gallery) and with Kvadrat 500, and the ticket desk here also sells tickets for the gallery’s house museums.
