The Cell School in Zlatograd is a museum in the yard of the Church of the Assumption in the town centre. The school marked the start of education in the Rhodopes.
The teacher’s table has been recreated: the teacher, who was also a tailor, sewed at it while watching the pupils gathered in the corner. The next room recreates a candle workshop, showing how candles were made.
The Church of the Assumption itself was built in 1834 and is the oldest church in the Rhodopes put up under Ottoman rule. It is sunk about half a metre into the ground.
The cell school opened in 1830. After the church was built, it moved to a building in the church yard, put up in 1835 in the yard’s north-west corner, next to the only entrance to the grounds.
Combine with: the "Education in the Central Rhodopes" collection in the 1852 Mutual School and the Ethnographic Area Complex — both also in Zlatograd.
