The Nikola Vaptsarov House Museum in Bansko is the birthplace of the poet Nikola Vaptsarov (1909–1942). It stands on the town’s central square and is one of the first museums in the Pirin region.
The museum has three parts. A video room spread over two rooms shows the poet’s family tree. An authentic ethnographic exhibition follows his life from birth to death; the home of his childhood was recreated following the instructions of his mother, Elena Vaptsarova. A separate video room is devoted to his poetry.
On show are copies of his manuscripts and the first publications of his poems, later collected in a book. A display case holds the suit, shirt and watch Vaptsarov wore before his execution. The collection has about 3,000 items.
The house has been a museum since 1952 — museum work in Bansko began with it. In 1953 the ground floor was turned into an exhibition hall, which was enlarged in 1969. The museum was rebuilt in 1979 and in 1989–1991.
