The Hadzhi Dimitar House Museum is the rebel leader’s birth house in the Klutsohor quarter of Sliven, on Asenova Street. It is a site of the Sliven Regional History Museum and is No. 54 among the 100 National Tourist Sites.
The small single-storey asymmetrical house with a wooden gallery shows the features of the early Revival. Next to it you can see his father’s inn with its outbuildings and the rooms where travellers stayed in pre-Liberation Sliven.
On the second floor of the museum complex a large exhibition is devoted to Hadzhi Dimitar and his comrade Stefan Karadzha — firearms and bladed weapons, photographs and documents on their band’s campaign of 1868. The latest renewed exhibition opened in April 2024.
Hadzhi Dimitar (Dimitar Nikolov Asenov) was born in Sliven to the merchant Nikola Asenov. In 1868 the band of Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadzha crossed the Danube; its last battle was at Buzludzha peak on 18 July 1868, and he died aged only 28. The museum collection opened in 1935, when the leader’s monument in Sliven was unveiled.
