The Palaveevi Houses Gallery is an art gallery in Koprivshtitsa on Dimcho Debelyanov Street, directly opposite the poet’s house museum. It occupies the Great Palaveev House, birthplace of Hadzhi Nencho Palaveev, the town’s most generous benefactor, and is run by the Koprivshtitsa Museum Directorate.
The gallery has a permanent display on the life and work of Hadzhi Nencho Palaveev, as his will required. In the main tourist season it hosts exhibitions of classic and contemporary Bulgarian artists, craftspeople and applied artists, and it is a venue for the town’s cultural events.
Hadzhi Nencho Palaveev was born in Koprivshtitsa in 1859 into the family of the wealthy merchant Doncho Palaveev. He traded on three continents — Europe, Asia and Africa — and gave large sums for public buildings, churches and memorials. In his will of 1932 he made his home town his "universal heir": the Great Palaveev House and its large garden passed to Koprivshtitsa, and a separate fund supports education in the town. The house has been fully restored. The gallery opened officially in 2012, though it was in use before that.
The gallery is seasonal and has its own ticket, separate from the combined ticket for the Koprivshtitsa museums. Check opening times on the Museum Directorate’s website.
Combine with: the Dimcho Debelyanov House Museum is opposite. The Directorate sells a combined ticket for six of its museums.
