Boninska Cave (also known as Popskaya or Slivovska Cave) is a remarkable natural landmark, ranking ninth among the longest caves in Bulgaria. It holds the unique distinction of being the longest navigable cave in the country. Located in the Slivov Dol area near the village of Krushuna, the cave is a complex two-tier system intrinsically linked to the famous Krushuna Waterfalls. Geography and Structure With a total length of 4,530 meters and a vertical range of 55 meters, Boninska Cave is a true marvel for speleologists. - Levels: The cave is developed on two levels. History of Discovery The first explorations were conducted in 1925 by N. Radev. Over the decades, various expeditions from the "Akademik" (Sofia) and "Studenets" (Pleven) clubs expanded the mapped area. A major breakthrough occurred between 1985 and 1990 when divers from Pleven successfully navigated through several siphons, discovering new galleries and establishing the cave's current length. Practical Information - Access: The entrance (7.5 m x 3.8 m) is located 2.4 km southeast of Krushuna village. It is accessible via a dirt road suitable only for 4x4 vehicles. - Best Time to Visit: Late summer and autumn. During other seasons, the cave can become completely flooded and impassable. - Note: Boninska Cave is not a developed "show cave." Entering requires specialized training, equipment, and should ideally be done with a professional guide.
