Kazanite is one of the most significant and rugged nature reserves in the Western Rhodope Mountains, Smolyan Province. It is a bastion of primeval forests characterized by their extreme inaccessibility and exceptional biological diversity. Foundation and Legal Status The reserve was officially established by Decree No. 508 of the Ministry of Forestry and Forest Industry on November 24, 1968. Spanning 161 hectares, its primary objective was the preservation of ancient, virgin mixed forests that have evolved entirely without human interference. In 2014, its boundaries were updated, officially placing the territory within the jurisdiction of Gyovren village, Devin Municipality. Location and Topography The reserve is situated on incredibly steep terrain, which has served as a natural defense against logging and development. - Terrain: The slopes within the reserve feature an incline of 36° to 45°, making any movement outside designated trails virtually impossible. - Altitude: The protected area reaches elevations up to 1500 meters above sea level. - Geology: The karst (limestone) landscape typical of the Devin and Gyovren regions influences the soil composition here, providing a unique habitat for rare calciphilous plant species. Flora and Forest Habitats Kazanite serves as a prime example of a healthy mixed coniferous and deciduous forest ecosystem. - Key Tree Species: The reserve is home to Silver Fir (Abies alba), European Black Pine (Pinus nigra), Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), Beech (Fagus), and Norway Spruce (Picea). - Biodiversity: A total of 143 species of medicinal plants have been identified within its borders. - Protected Flora: Rare plants listed in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria can be found here, such as the Bulgarian Alchemilla, Bulgarian Rock Samphire, and Bearberry. - European Significance: Three of the forest habitats in the reserve are protected under the European Union's Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). Fauna Due to the strict protection and lack of human disturbance, the reserve provides a sanctuary for: - Mammals: 49 species have been recorded, including the brown bear, roe deer, and wild goat (Balkan chamois). - Birds: 83 species inhabit the area, with the European Honey Buzzard and the Black Woodpecker being of particular conservation interest. Practical Info - Kazanite is a strict nature reserve. Access is permitted only along the designated and marked eco-trail. Picking plants, lighting fires, and straying from the official path are strictly prohibited. - The nearest settlement is the village of Gyovren. Regular bus services connect major cities to the town of Devin. We recommend checking the bus schedule for Devin, and from there, you can take a taxi or local transport to Gyovren to reach the trailhead.
