Chervenata Stena (the Red Wall) is a reserve in the Western Rhodopes, in the valley of the Chepelarska river and on the Dobrostan ridge, close to Bachkovo Monastery and Asen's Fortress. It is the largest reserve in the Rhodopes. It was declared in 1962 over 3,029 ha, and in 1977 it was added to UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme. The reserve is exclusively state-owned and guarded by the Regional Environment Inspectorate in Plovdiv.

What it protects

The reserve was created for its plants. 645 species of higher plants have been recorded, 38 of them in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The rare species and endemics include the Rhodope tulip, the Rhodope anemone, Rhodope flax, the Rhodope haberlea (Orpheus flower) and yew. The low parts carry scrubby oak woods with oriental hornbeam and manna ash. Higher up these give way to beech forest, and the highest parts hold black pine, Scots pine and fir. The animals include the Greek stream frog, the spur-thighed tortoise, the snake-eyed lizard and the black stork.

How to see it

You may enter the reserve only on the marked paths. Leaving them, camping, lighting fires and picking plants are forbidden. Good starting points are Bachkovo Monastery and the village of Bachkovo, where the marked path to Martsiganitsa hut sets off. The Sushitsa river valley is also part of the reserve.

When

Spring is the best season for the flowers, and autumn for the colours of the forest. The valley is low and summers are hot, so set out early.
