The eco trail in the village of Mezek, Svilengrad municipality, links the village with the medieval fortress above it. It is maintained by the Prosveta community centre, marked with wooden signs and about 2.4 km long.
It starts in the village (about 170 m above sea level) and climbs by steps and paths to the fortress on a terrace at the foot of the St Marina ridge, also called Gorata. A road from the western edge of the village towards Sheynovets peak also leads to the fortress.
The Mezek fortress, which locals call Kaleto, is an 11th–12th century Byzantine border stronghold identified with the fortress of Neutzikon. It is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Bulgaria and lies about a kilometre from the Greek border. About 1 km east of the village is the Thracian domed tomb in the Maltepe mound — found by chance in 1931, from the late 4th century BC and nearly 30 m long. It is one of the 100 National Tourist Sites.
A short walk with a climb up steps. Carry water.
Mezek is 10 km west of Svilengrad and 60 km south-east of Haskovo.

Mezek Eco Trail is best walked from May through October, when the trail is clear of snow and weather is generally stable. Summer middays can be hot at lower altitudes — start early. Winter walking requires proper gear and route knowledge.
Suitability depends on the specific route. Bulgarian trails range from paved family-friendly paths to multi-day high-mountain crossings. Check the length, elevation gain, and surface before setting off. Sturdy footwear, water, and a basic map (offline or paper) are essential even on short walks.
