Leshnitsa Reserve lies in the Shipka section of the Stara Planina, in the catchment of the river of the same name, in the lands of the village of Yasenovo, Kazanlak municipality. It was declared in 1984 and covers 388.95 ha.
The reserve protects a range of characteristic ecosystems of the low-mountain forest belt. The main tree is beech, about 160 years old and 18 m tall on average, with hornbeam, sessile oak and manna ash. Roe deer, red deer, wild boar, pine marten, bear and birds of prey live here. The reserve overlaps the Bigorovata Skala natural landmark, a rounded travertine rock that the river has pitted with holes. The area is in the Central Balkan buffer Natura 2000 sites.
All activity in the reserve is banned except guarding, scientific visits, walking on marked paths, and collecting seeds and specimens for science. The hiking route up the Leshnitsa valley from Yasenovo passes Bigorovata Skala, and an information board marks where the reserve begins. Stay on the path.
The route starts in the village of Yasenovo, west of Kazanlak, and follows the river upstream.
