The Museum of Socialist Art (officially the Museum of Art from the Socialist Period) is at 7 Lachezar Stanchev Street in Sofia’s Izgrev district. A branch of the National Gallery, it was Bulgaria’s first museum to collect and show art from 1944–1989 connected with the socialist era.
The museum has three parts. A 7,500 m² park holds more than 70 monumental sculptures — mostly statues and busts of Bulgarian and Soviet communists such as Georgi Dimitrov, Dimitar Blagoev, Vasil Kolarov and Lenin, plus typical socialist-realist figures: partisans, Red Army soldiers, workers and co-operative farmers. To the right of the entrance stands the original red star that topped the Party House in central Sofia from 1954 to 1984.
In the 550 m² gallery, temporary shows present the ideological forms of art — painting and small sculpture. A video room screens archive and documentary films from the period, and a shop sells catalogues and souvenirs.
The museum opened on 19 September 2011. Many of the statues are copper, bronze and other alloys; instead of being melted down they were kept in storage for more than 20 years before being brought together here. Its opening drew sharp criticism from right-wing parties.
The museum is closed on Mondays and public holidays; check the National Gallery website for times.
With children: the sculpture park is outdoors and can be explored freely.
The museum is outside the centre, in Izgrev, close to Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard. The National Anthropological Museum is on the same boulevard.
