The Nikola Tanev House Museum is the painter’s flat on Evlogi i Hristo Georgievi Boulevard in central Sofia. It has been a museum since the 1970s and is a branch of the National Gallery. Tanev lived here from 1931 until his death in 1962.
Tanev’s paintings — landscapes, still lifes and nudes — hang in the home where many were made. Parts of his "Bulgarian Room" survive: a suite of painted furniture, ceramics, embroidered textiles and household objects inspired by folk art, created in 1926 for an exhibition of the Native Art Society. To make it, Tanev toured Bulgaria drawing National Revival frescoes, stone reliefs, fountains and woodcarvings. His townscapes of Karlovo, painted from 1927, are central to his work.
Nikola Tanev (1890–1962) was born in Svishtov. From 1908 to 1912 he studied at the Paris Academy of Decorative Arts, and in 1910 he attended Claude Monet’s studio at Giverny. After returning in 1912 he held his first solo show — 55 in all, 28 in Bulgaria and 27 abroad. He was a founder of the Native Art Society. He left the flat to the state in 1955.
The National Gallery’s house museums open on weekdays only, Tuesday to Friday; check the gallery’s website for times. Tickets are also sold at the National Gallery ticket offices.
